Panther Basics

Audience:
Developers who need to understand how to build n-tier transactional business applications for the Web and Windows environments using Panther.

Prerequisites:
Although introductory in nature, this course was created for developers with prior knowledge of a programming language such as C or C++. A basic understanding of client/server, database, and web technologies, although not required, would enhance the learning experience.

Description:
This instructor-led course teaches the essential skills needed to develop n-tier transactional applications. The course includes lectures and hands-on lab work to enforce the fundamental concepts, core features, and usage of the Panther product.

Some of the topics covered in this course include:

  • An overview of the features and functionality of the Panther product
  • Using the Panther Screen Editor
  • Processing of client events
  • Database access using the DBMS command interface and the Transaction Manager interface
  • Using the ReportWriter
  • Web development and server architecture.

Panther Developer Training

Audience:
Future developers of 2 and 3-tier Graphic User Interface (GUI) client/server, or transactional web applications.

Prerequisites:
Since this course is introductory in nature, there are no specific prerequisites. All future Prolifics developers are welcome. The course will be of particular value to developers who may have some knowledge of a programming language (such as C or C++), understanding of basic relational database concepts, and Graphic User Interface (GUI) experience (Windows, Motif, or Macintosh). In addition, basic web knowledge such as HTML, JAVA, and JavaScript, while not required, may help future transactional web developers get the most from the course.

Description:
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Prolifics development environment. Students are taught the basic techniques of screen design, application implementation, database access, object programming, application partitioning, and web development. An introduction to 2 and 3 tier development is included and the use of all Prolifics subsystems is detailed. Course concentration is on the basics of developing both 2 and 3 tier custom client applications utilizing either client/server or 3-tier middleware application architecture, and the Prolifics GUI client and HTML web interfaces. Topics of discussion include an introduction to web technology, building client screens and service containers, programming in JPL, using Prolifics events, Prolifics API, SQL database access, Transaction Manager, running reports, and service writing.

If requested, the course can include usage of the Panther product integrated with IBM WebSphere's EJB technology and/or integration with Microsoft's COM technology.
